Quest’s Advanced Dry Cooler Technology

Hi, I’m Geoff Brown, VP of Technical Solutions with Quest. I’d like to just introduce our Dry Cooler line and why we use dry coolers across our product line.

The dry coolers allow us to totally decouple the refrigeration system from outdoor ambient, and it solves the single biggest challenge that exists in refrigeration components in this marketplace. By decoupling indoor and outdoor, the refrigerant lines aren’t running from an indoor unit to an outdoor condenser or from an outdoor condensing unit to an indoor unit. There are no hot work permits involved in installing them. You’re simply running PVC and glycol from the indoor unit to the outdoor unit. It allows us to ensure that we’re able to deliver full cooling dehumidification and any need for reheat, any time of the year, with any ambient condition outdoor, down to minus 40 without any trouble at all.

We build these dry coolers from as small as the eight-ton model here behind me to as large as a six V dry cooler – so, that would do up to about 180 tons of heat rejection. We also package them on systems, outdoor packaged systems for either pad-mount or roof mount, so there’s a lot of flexibility involved there. And we can tie multiple indoor units to a single dry cooler to achieve some cost savings. There are different control strategies available as well, based on either leaving water temperature or based on head pressure of the units. And we can aggregate multiple units, head pressure control signal, into a single dry cooler, and that dry cooler is using an EC fan to ensure that it’s not spinning any faster than it needs to to be able to reject all the heat, to keep the noise and power usage as low as possible. Our large dry coolers that aren’t packaged on a system have pump kits on them. And that pump kit includes all the waterside specialty needed to allow that system to integrate very easily. So, that pump kit has an expansion tank, an auto air vent, an air separator, fill valves, and the pump itself, as well as all the controls needed to make that work. And each V has its own pump kit, ensuring that there’s some redundancy there. Any one of those pump kits can fail and you’ll still have flow that exists at all times.

That’s sort of the long and short of why we do dry coolers. We’ve done them this way for years. It’s proven technology that somehow hasn’t made it into this market yet, and we’re very excited to be able to bring it to you.
